This award-winning speculative romance takes the reader from a Mayan archaeological site in 1970, through a mysterious corridor, and into the year 750 where a Mayan prince believes the “golden beauty” stepping out of the temple is his new bride, a gift to him from the gods. Archeologist Raina Cotterell and her three colleagues don’t want to believe that they have stepped back in time, or that the portal only opens twice a year on the equinox. This has got to be an elaborate practical joke. But no, they are trapped in 750 AD for the next six months.
FEATHER ON THE WIND offers additional conflict with romantic triangles. Prince Al-Mon is hot for Raina, and so is one of her coworkers (who, by some quirk of fate, could be Al-Mon’s twin brother). While Raina prefers the prince over her coworker, she doesn’t want to encourage him because she is a scientist who wants minimum impact on a society not her own. What could this accident do to the future? Already they have passed modern-day flu to these ancients. And the Mayan woman who has wanted to be queen all of her life is not pleased when Prince Al-Mon’s attention turns from her.
How will it all come out? Interestingly well, as most romances do, of course. If this is the kind of read you usually enjoy, I can tell you that I rated this a 7 out of 10. FEATHER ON THE WIND is structurally sound, but I didn’t go goo-goo-ga-ga over it. The cultural descriptions are beautiful, but the romance formula is too pat for this reader’s preferences.
