Reading this story reminded me of drifting down the Mississippi River with Huckleberry Finn, except The One Kingdom has more intrigue.  Instead of Twain's quaint charm, Russell captivates his readers with a mystical style that is lyrical at times: compelling.  I love his work and this book has been a re-read for me in anticipation of book two coming out this spring.

The One Kingdom is a land on the verge of war.  One story line follows three young men on their journey down the River Wynnd, a strange river that leads many astray and conjures spirits out of it's depths.  Tam, Fynnol, and Baore set out to sell trinkets down river but find instead a dangerous path that entwines them deep into the intrigues of the other plot-lines.  The overriding theme of The One Kingdom is the battle for a throne no longer in existence.  The war has yet to start but many skirmishes are yet fought as two main families make preparations to come out on top.  The tension in the air brings out three ancient spirits, powerful sorcerous spirits reborn and ready to make this battle their own.

A good read: highly recommended.
