Monette, Sarah
THE VIRTU
Sarah Monette
ACE 2006
Hb 439 pages
ISBN# 0-441-01404-6
I’m going to have to add Sarah Monette to my Favorites List. Already, I’ve been spreading the word on how I love her style, on how This is a good example for new writers on what viewpoint is all about. There is Never any doubt who’s perspective the reader is experiencing when reading Monette. She tells the tale of two men; and while reading in each man’s point of view, it is as if you Are that man. Oh the characterization, world-building, and plotting are also excellent, I just adore her style.
The virtu is “the orb that is the keystone for the protections and magic of the wizards of” the city Mélusine. THE VIRTU picks up where MELUSINE left off [so be sure to read the other book first]. Felix Harrowgate is thankful for being rescued, but he feels drawn back to Mélusine, feels that he must fix what he broke, he must repair the virtu. The trek home is arduous and dangerous. Mélusine is just as corrupt as before, except now it’s even more difficult to find allies. Felix must face his deepest fears. His brother Mildmay faces worse. But they are tied by blood and by magic. That they have to work together is a challenge—for both men have a temper, and they both want things their own way.
This is a creepy story with ghosts and other wonders—I love it!
