Yummy! Ooo, this was a fun read. A friend of mine begged me to try a book in the Warhammer series and this was my first--he told me about the two main story lines and I chose the 40,000 series. FOR THE EMPEROR is a Ciaphas Cain novel, for those of you who are already into this, and if you are, you know the name Ciaphas Cain means you are going to have a bloody good read (pun intended). Alex Stewart (writing as Sandy Mitchell) throws readers punch after punch of hearty action and humorous attitude.
In FOR THE EMPEROR, Commissar Cain yet again tries--unsuccessfully--to avoid getting into circumstances where he might get killed. [Don’t let his attitude fool you, he really is a great hero.] In the beginning of the book he gets handed the command of putting two Valhallan regiments together, two regiments that are literally at one another’s throats, and has to meld them into one fighting unit bound for a backwater planet caught in civil war. At first the Imperium does not know the full extent of the troubles on Gravalax, in fact circumstances become so desperate that Ciaphas finds himself thrust into partnership with an Imperial Inquisitor! And she drags Ciaphas into a problem bigger than the planet and ever more dangerous.
Highly recommended for action/adventure addicts. I believe FOR THE EMPEROR is a prequel to CAVES OF ICE, another Commissar Cain novel by the same author.
