Even though Quest For Lost Heroes is the third book of Gemmell's Drenai Saga you can pick it up first.  In fact, if you've never read Gemmell before, this is a good place to start because Quest For Lost Heroes is a wonderful introduction to the works of a great storyteller.  Gemmell writes stories about heroes, the kind of heroes a reader can really get involved with: weaknesses, fears, failures and foibles -- and uncompromising courage!  Real people in a fantasy world.

So this is the story: A long time ago there was a war and, of course, heroes of war.  Now, years later, a young man (Kiall) needs help on a hopeless quest to rescue his fair lady from the clutches of savage Nadren slave raiders.  He is able to enlist the aid of the heroes of the battle of Bal-azar: Blademaster Chareos, the incomparable archer Finn, his skilled hunter-friend Maggrig, and Beltzer, the axe-wielding "giant of legend."  Together they face Jungir Khan, the treacherous leader of the Nadir who has a lot more than malicious warriors to throw against these men who seek to steel his new wife.  But first our heroes must fight through powerful circumstances for which they are unprepared.

I love this book, have read it twice and, someday will read it again.
