David Gemmell's stories are all guaranteed to provide high action and intense characterization in a flavor reminiscent of Louis L'Amour; except with a sword and sorcery twist.

Once a simple farmer come home to find his wife and three children murdered, circumstances have changed Dakeyras into a name so feared--Waylander The Slayer--our "hero in the shadows" is now known only as The Gray Man.  Haunted by his past, and driven by an unconscious desperation to save his dead family, Waylander tires of accumulated wealth and plans to move on just as demons come into his land.

The magicker Eldicar Manushan and his master, the hideous sorcerer Deresh Karany, lead the invasion from the long-forgotten realm of Kuan Hador. Entering through a magical gateway with their deadly Kriaz-nor, and shrouded in an icy fog which attacks hapless travelers, they move into The Gray Man's palace.  When his friends are tortured and killed, Waylander The Slayer steps in.  Others have been called by the Source, the power of heaven, to assist him: a powerful "meld" priestess, Ustarte; a Chiatze Rajnee of incredible skill (think Samurai warrior); and several common people who learn they have talents they never dreamed possible.

A good read.  David Gemmell never ceases to entertain.
