This is a fantasy for readers who like to imagine what it might be like to have the magical powers for healing, &/or being telepathically linked to an animal that aids your magical powers. Heroine Reisil doesn't want to live the life of an ahalad-kaaslane but gets trapped into accepting that fact when a visiting dignitary s daughter is kidnapped and the blame will fall on Reisil's people if she doesn't aid in locating the young woman before more damage is done.

Along the way Reisil falls in love with a prince, but this is not a romance novel, it is Reisil's quest to discover who she is and come into an acceptance of the fact that she has more power than any other mortal on earth. It is a power that kills in the defence of others, to Reisil's dismay. Reisil and her bound goshawk are needed to save the people of Kodu Riik from war and worse.

The world-building and story-telling in this volume are well done. I like Penguin Group because they give you books that aren't boring in a high quality format. Fans of Carol Berg and Kate Elliot will like this story.
