Looking for a good stand-alone fantasy read? Each book in Julie D’Arcy’s Tarlisian Saga is a separate story in the same fantasy world. TIME OF THE WOLF is the tale of Radin Hawk, Lord of the Wolf tribe, Prince of the Uplands, who saves Princess Keahla from slavers only to become entrenched in a battle for her people three hundred years ago. Seems a sorcerer made a mistake eight hundred years before that and has now thrown these two young people together to rectify that terrible wrong. Radin travels a time portal with this woman who has already decided she doesn’t like him. He has no choice, for his father placed Radin’s inheritance at risk because of the sorcerer’s meddling. Besides, Radin is enamored with the girl. And of course there is a powerful sorceress queen to battle, her demon monsters, and her misguided army.

TIME OF THE WOLF reminds me of David Gemmell’s style, with time travel mixed in and a very nice subplot of romance. The editing is adequate though not perfect. The characterization and world-building are nicely done. The plotting is fascinating with the flavor of Katharine Kerr’s “I knew you in a previous life” reincarnation theme.

TIME OF THE WOLF is recommended for fans of sword & sorcery who like a lot of action. This one does not disappoint.
