The sequel to The Dreamstone in which Ciarn (introduced towards the end of The Dreamstone) becomes the master of Caer Wiell through his marriage to Evald's daughter Branwyn and because of his mixed elf (Sidhe)/human blood, becomes close to Arafel, the last Sidhe who guards the Ealdwood. Together the two will unite, calling back the self-exiled Sidhe for a grand battle with an evil enemy who has corrupted a want-to-be king.

Author Cherryh spins another fine story in her Celtic/Welsh/English amalgam fantasy world. Here though, character introspection dominates the story, adding perhaps to the reader's understanding of the characters actions, but then arguably slowing the story's pace to a crawl at points. Still though, a finely textured read from a master of the genre.
