Romantic fantasy set in a world where evil lurks on the horizon. Randrik alt Harbinnen has always known that he’s good at magic, but he’s smart enough not to let the Temple snag him for their purposes. Unfortunately, he has fallen in with the wrong crowd and, when he goes his own way, the Queen of the Beggars sends out assassins to teach him a lesson. But this is not Randrik’s biggest problem. His aunt, Prime Seeker of the Temple of Light, asked him to seduce one of her Adepts so that the young woman’s magic might be released, a magic greatly needed for defence since an evil god awakes in the east. Randrik does not at first know the part he is to play in this defense against evil. Honor keeps him from following his aunt’s orders when he learns the horrors of the Adept’s past. Nothing, however, can keep him from Perian’s side once he falls in love with her.

I liked this book. All the qualities of good writing and story-telling are balanced within, and I eagerly pick up the next in the series SHADOW OF THE SCORPION. Zumaya puts out a good product.
